Annealing heat treatments improve machinability and increase ductility and impact resistance.  Castings, forgings, and cold-worked parts are annealed to modify the microstructure of the raw part to produce more uniform properties.  Annealing treatments with protective atmospheres reduce decarburization or scale formation on the part surface.
